The New Zealand Industry Training Organisation (NZITO) is recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), as a Standard Setting Body, for the dairy manufacturing, meat processing, energy & chemical plant (process operations) & occupational safety and health. This provides for the ability to establish and confer national qualifications at a tertiary level in these fields.

The NZITO is also responsible for the registration of workplace assessors. Registered assessors are able to confirm trainee competence against standards. This includes the recognition of prior learning for skill/knowledge individuals already possess. Qualifications are modular and competence based so trainees can learn in stages, and at their own pace. Most modules require both a theoretical and a practical demonstration of competence by the trainee. The NZITO has set quality controls for training procedures and workplace assessment. These requirements are set out in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plans for NZITO qualifications. Programmes for training are constantly being reviewed and new additions made.
